The EU Battery Directive
20 December 2007

Pic Description: The EU Battery Directive comes into force 26th September 2008
From the 26th September 2008, it will become illegal to sell Nickel Cadmium batteries or cells within Europe.
The new EU Battery Directive (2066/66/EC) is due to come into force on 26th September 2008, and will introduce legal restrictions on batteries and cells which contain specified amounts of either mercury, lead and cadmium. In effect, it will become illegal to sell Nickel Cadmium batteries or cells within Europe.
Although some applications will have exemptions under the new law, it has become apparent that suppliers are starting to reduce the availability of Nickel Cadmium cells within Europe already. This means that in the very near future we expect the availability of Nickel Cadmium to decrease as manufacturers and distributors adjust their stocks. Even before the Directive comes into force, we anticipate increased lead times and some degree of disruption to supply.
Nickel Cadmium can, in most cases, be directly replaced by Nickel Metal-Hydride alternatives with minimal changes. We are recommending that all Nickel Cadmium users consider alternatives, regardless of exemption status.
Creasefield are able to provide technical and sales support to facilitate the move away from Nickel Cadmium. Please contact us to discuss your ongoing requirements and the options available.
